CRY

Michael Jackson Cry Lyrics and VideoCry” is a song from Michael Jackson’s 2001 album, Invincible , written by R&B songwriter R. Kelly, who performs the backup vocals. This is one of three songs written by Kelly for Jackson, the other two being “One More Chance” and “You Are Not Alone”.

Song Details

The song was the second single from Invincible, but was released only in Europe, Australia and Canada. It peaked at #25 on the UK Singles Chart.

An anthemic, uplifting song, “Cry” featured a full choir, like other Jackson songs such as “Earth Song”, “Man in the Mirror” and “Heal the World”.[3] Like these songs, there is a climactic key change in the final section of the song, lifting the main key up a half-step to increase intensity.

Though originally set for a U.S. release, and meant to be played on New York radio stations, in wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, “Cry” was replaced by “Butterflies” when the latter was released as a promo single.

Lyrics and Meaning

The song is written in the key of A Major until the climatic key change half way through the song. The song is a melodic, soft, R&B track which is uplifiting. After the middle breakdown of the song, a key change takes place and the sounds of a gospel choir kick in for the rest of the song.

The song ‘Cry’ talks about all the problems in the world like previous singles “Man In The Mirror” and “Heal The World.” It discusses the issues and subjects of war, loneliness, lying, changing the world, depression, suicide, miracles, and faith. It also suggests if everyone pulls together as one, then we can all make a change to the world.

Music Video

The music video for “Cry” features many people holding hands in different places. This could be to symbolize the lyric: If we all cry, at the same time tonight. The music video is directed by Nick Brandt who also shot the music videos “Childhood” and “Earth Song” for Michael.

Jackson does not appear in the music video. At the time, rumors persisted that this was because Jackson was unhappy with the budget allocated for promotions and music videos associated with his album Invincible. It was also rumored that he wanted to re-work the music video for the UK and U.S., but this was canceled due to his record label Sony canceling all promotions and music videos for Jackson.

Yes, this is a beautiful song like so many other “under-rated” songs that I wish he would have promoted again to get listeners another chance to see how beautiful they really are…but by means of other circumstances, the poor thing was misunderstood and some other means of issues that put him off…this is what makes me so sad for him along with other incidents during his life!
